You’ll make like a finch and eat thistle. From a feeder, no less, not from the ground.
It’s COLD and everything, but everything, is frozen solid and covered with snow. It’s a tough life for a snow bird.

slingingink – I’m all for warm, fuzzy or not.
con – obviously, Michigan juncos are trendsetters
firefly – hunger must drive adaptation; i’ve even seen house sparrows (the master adapters) figure how to hang upside down and eat thistle. Thanks for the millet suggestion. I have lots of ground feeders picking up the crumbs underneath, and have been pondering what to put out for them.
lana – I’ve often wondered how they survive this weather as well as they do. I’m happy I can do a little something to help them out.
larry – we’ve had enough really cold weather to weed out the bird brains, that’s for sure.
birdchaser – Hmmm …. might be hard to get the birds to agree for that one!
Perhaps we need more research into how cold effects the brains of birds!
I guess if the Juncos are hungry enough they can figure it out.-On really cold days birds need to get food fast or they won’t make it for long.
Poor, cold birdies!
I’ve seen them do that on the wire mesh finch feeder I have, too.
I also throw millet on the ground under the hedges every couple of days, and it’s surprising how many birds go for it.
The juncos are eating finch food from a feeder at my house, too.
Gives me the warm winter fuzzies
