Yes, I flew south for a few days, to my old haunts around Washington, DC. The first photo in yesterday’s post is of the Air Force Memorial, the second two are of the Washington Monument. Both were taken from a nature area across the Potomac River.
Despite the sign indicating we were in the Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary, I saw only one bird, this female mallard.
But I’m not complaining. There’s excellent birding in the area, but our visit was centered around a dinner and a brunch/birthday party in celebration of Mr Wren’s Uncle Mike’s 90th birthday. We added on a visit to some dear friends I hadn’t seen in nearly two years (and who hosted a party for us as well as lent us their guest bedroom), a quick trip to visit Ma & Pa Wren, and dinner with BFF Judy and her husband. It was a wonderful, wonderful long weekend and I wouldn’t have missed a minute of it for all the birds in North America.

Mary, it was wonderful. I’m glad I had a few “nature minutes” at the end.
Wren, I asked you in the previous post about the first photo. Air Force Memorial? Mmmm, very interesting. And of course you answered my other question about taking the photos in Virginia. I’m sure glad you had a nice visit and trip.
2sweet – Thanks!
deborah – I’m not much on swimming under the best of circumstances, and I still remember when no one could swim in the Potomac or eat fish caught there. So the duck was welcome to float undisturbed by me.
Sounds like a very nice time for humans…but I must say, that pond water looks like something only a dabbling duck could love!
Awwww… I’m so glad you had such a great time!
Jayne – you are so right. It was a very special weekend in many ways.
linda – that’s the place, across the parkway from the equally favored plane-watching spot of Gravelly Point. Lovely names we have in Virginia, eh? The Lady Bird Johnson Park is a little further west, just past the 14th street bridge. It was closed while we were there for road construction on the parkway.
as a teenager we would gather at roaches run to watch the planes fly into what was then national airport.
didn’t know much about birds then, except wasn’t ladybird johnson somehow responsible for roaches run?
would love to go back and see the area again.
So nice to reconnect with family and friends… makes life so much richer, doesn’t it?
