around the rec area

Our first view of the rec area was a large paved parking lot, with a boat ramp and a lot of flashing lights at one end (more about that tomorrow). While that doesn’t sound promising, it turned out that despite the pavement and the excitement, there was nature to be found.

I can’t identify the first flower below, but I think the second may be fleabane – please offer your own suggestions if that doesn’t seem likely. And I do recognize the critter in the third picture as a grasshopper, but that’s as specific as I can get.

Yes, it does. Thanks, thiotimoline!

The first one looks like an evening primrose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oenothera).

Thanks, Bernie. I saw some flowers similar to those in the second photo on another blog which identified them as fleabane. I wouldn’t let a student get away with that level of verification but I think it’s good enough for me in this context.

Can’t identify the first flower, but I also believe the second one is fleabane, nice shots !!

yeah, Tom, that’s what I thought too. But it couldn’t be that easy, could it?

Wren: Nice nature views, I always thought the second one looked like little daisies.
