back at the ranch

in Close to Home,birds

September and October are the two busiest months of the year at work, so right at peak migration season I have the least possible amount of time to spend bird watching or even sitting outside. Nonetheless, there are scattered moments when I glimpse a flash in the yard, hear a woodpecker drumming, or wonder aloud, “what was that?”

When ever I hear the crows and squirrels raising a racket, I know there’s something to see.

Larry, when you frame it in those terms, retirement doesn’t sound so bad!

Hi Wren, I seems that most of us know how precious time is these days. It’s the only thing we can’t get back. I try to go out during the day when the weather is nice, then stay up till midnight doing all my indoor work and try to get by on 5 hours of sleep a night….hmmm. Looking forward to the time when this will be all the work I have to do! Birdwatch and blog, yeah, that’s the life!

Klaus – I just need a few more weeks, and it will be a little less hectic. Hope you find the same, soon.

Bummer, not having time, huh? I’m also strapped, hardly able to make my rounds…
Cheers, Klaus

Kathie, I think the ones I’m seeing now are migrating through the area. The one in the photo was part of a kettle of 3-4 riding the thermals over the golf course.

Don’t you hate being responsible? The job pays for the bird seed, cat food, and other necessities of life, but sometimes it’s darn inconvenient.

So the turkey vultures still haven’t migrated from up there either? I still have them here in AZ but soon they will be gone also. Every day I wonder if this will be the last day I see one. You got a nice photo of it as it flew off. Even without a job, I often find myself stuck inside with housework or blogging when all I want to do is be OUTSIDE! I am trying to change that, especialy as the days get cooler and shorter. I can blog in the dark but I can’t bird watch in it (unless I’m searching for owls of course!)

Con – Thanks. As we say, from your keyboard to God’s ears!

Bernie – I wish it were that simple, too.

Robin – We haven’t seen much of the inbound migrants, but it’s clear the birds of summer have departed.

We haven’t seen signs of the migrations yet, maybe not for another month. I had forgotten how the crows and squirrels announce the presence of other creatures. Thanks for the reminder.

Those days of “scattered moments” make me want to abandon my work and spend all my time outdoors observing.
May your work proceed as quickly as possible so you can once again have time for your reflections.
