As I mentioned in The Things You Learn, the groundhogs wore a bare spot in the neighbor’s field.
Now, I’m noticing that right in that same spot, the vegetation is different. No idea what that means, it’s just one of those interesting things you notice.

Larry – I like your theory best so far.
Maybe aliens practice the art of photosynthesis-or maybe they were Irish beer swilling groundhougs.
Mary, next thing you know, farmers will be buying groundhog diapers [not]
Dave might be spot on! LOL!
Deborah, well done on the pun
Robert, I think that covers all the bases.
According to Hog Haven (http://www.hoghaven.com/study.html)
“What are groundhogs dens like?
… burrows typically have two entrances or more– one main entrance and a peep hole (or escape route). Inside, there are separate dens for sleeping/nursing and potty facilities. We are very clean animals and we keep our dens clean. In fact, we carpet them with leaves, and we wipe our feet before entering! “
I love a good hydro-eco-geo-logical mystery!
I agree, that is an interesting possibility suggested by Dave. I don’t know about the habits of groundhogs, either; they are pretty much alien to me (pun intended, in fact, deliberate)
Interesting idea, Dave. Hadn’t thought of that, and don’t know if it’s a likely explanation given groundhog habits, but you never know.
Maybe these plants were brought in via the groundhog “squeezin’s?”
