Dakota tagged me for the top five meme, asking me to identify my top five dream birding locations. Like most of you, I have a list like that floating around in my head, but it’s much longer than five places. I eliminated anywhere I’d already visited, even if I wanted to return. A couple were easy to choose, but then it got harder to identify what I could remove from my list to get down to only five. I finally made the cuts, but I have to say that this is just a snapshot of my thinking – who knows when a photo or blog post will inspire me to put another location entirely at the top of my list?
Anchors aweigh!
Wren’s Top 5 List of Dream Birding Locations:
Antarctica: any one who knows me, knows I love penguins. This was a no-brainer to head the list. It’s not like I’m going to see wild antarctic penguins anywhere else, now is it?
Hawaii’s Big Island: This has got to be one of the greatest places to bird, and again, you won’t find these species in the wild anywhere else
Rio Grande Valley: I doubt I have to explain this one to any birders, but I may to Mr Wren, who still thinks that some of the great birding places I suggest for vacations are a little unusual.
Bosque del Apache: I see incredible photos taken there, and I want to have an opportunity to do the same.
South Africa: This one wasn’t as clear-cut for me, but I’ve never been to any place in Africa, and I’ve heard good things about birding there.
Now, the challenge is to tag five more bloggers for the next iteration. I would like to ask
Nina, at Nature Remains
Jayne, at Journey through Grace
Bev, at Behind the Bins
Mary, at Faith, Fabric, and Photos
2sweetnsaxy, at Eyes, Mind, Heart
to share with us the five greatest joys they each find in nature.

Lew – I hope I have at least one or two of those trips in my future.
You have some long trips in your future! I have not been to any of those places either, but I did find some gulls close to home.
I haven’t been to any of them either, Dakota, but I hope I will eventually make it to some of them.
Nina, no rush.
Jayne, you’ve got WV in your future already. Who knows where you’ll end up next?
Bev – the Internet seems to be getting slower and slower everywhere. We may be back to pony express before much longer. But as I said to Nina – no rush.
Mary – this meme is a little different. It’s called “top 5″ and as far as I can tell, you can ask the five people you tap for a top 5 list of anything you like, or even ask each a different top five.
Wren…I just found this and your invitation on my blog. I usually don’t like to do these memes, because they are about “me” and I don’t know 6 interesting things to say:-) This one sounds interesting, being about nature, and I will think about it and post an answer when I’ve given it some thought. Thank you for thinking of me! Your answers are very interesting, but I’m glad you changed it a bit, because I would have no idea where to choose! I’d go anywhere!
I have never been to your top 5 places and Hawaii is so up there on my list. As for penguins, they have them at the tip of South America too. I have been noodling about a cruise from Sanatiago, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Would Mr.Wren like that better?
I accept your meme, it make take a few days (this hotel has the SLOWEST internet access on the planet.)
Well, since I’ve never been birding outside my own backyard, I’ll stick to the five greatest joys in nature. :c) I am sure these places are all magical though and maybe someday…
Hmm.
This sounds like a challenge I’ll accept.
But, after some thought, because I want to do it “well.” So, give me a few days to gather some thoughts and organize them into something others will understand–
that, for me, will be the hardest part.
Bosque del Apache–on my list, too!
Thanks for doing the meme! All those places sound very fun for birding and I have not been to any one of them.
