Drive to the end of the Dalton Highway, and turn left.
The photo below is of our motel, but it shows most of the town as well. Note the resemblance to trailers used for housing pipeline construction workers – recycling, just like at Coldfoot.
We had the rest of the afternoon free to explore. I learned that Deadhorse and Miami Beach aren’t as different as you might think.
We were warned not to wander to far afeild, as the polar bears were awake and hungry. I did venture around back of the motel, because one of our friends on the bus said there was a pond with baby ducks.
Found the pond, and the birds.
Guess what?
Lifer! Red-necked Phalarope.

Nice pics, Wren! It looks like you found your way To Deadhorse, Alaska! Comeback anytime you wish! Cheers!
Not too many place you go and take a photo of the motel and take in the rest of the town too.
The ducks in the pond behind the motel were definitely worth visiting. They are handsome!
You are so brave to wander out with the possibility of bears about. Yikes! Beautiful photos that you captured though.
That’s ok, Robert, I was thinking about the plastic flamingos, anyway.
Kathie, I remember when being described as a tempting morsel meant something else entirely.
To all, I would have loved to have seen a polar bear the same way I saw the two grizzlies – from inside a bus, and a fair distance away. Not seeing a polar bear in the wild the whole trip was my one disappointment. Darn, I may have to go back!
(I wish)
What a feeling it must give you to know that you could be a tempting morsel for a polar bear! How awesome to get the phalarope! Did you see it spin?
A polar bear would have been a lifer for me! Glad you found somethinf a wee bit smaller to fit the bill.
Glad you kept and eye out for the Polar Bears, great post.
hmm…i would love to see polar bears as near as possible that is not dangerous:) interesting post you got here and oh, first time to see those cute little birds on the pond.
Deadhorse sounds like a cool place. Those polar bears are not to be messed with.
Thanks for taking us to Deadhorse. Too bad you didn’t see bears, from a distance.
I’m glad you found the ducks and not the polar bears!
I don’t think you would have missed a polar bear if it had been there. Not a whole lot of anything is blocking the view. How exciting to find a life bird in a pond like that.
Great flamingo … but for the record, we don’t have any real live flamingos in Florida, … only spoonbills. (Long story)
Betsy, I wasn’t go far with bears roaming around, either. Luckily, the pond was literally behind the motel, not more than a few yards away. And I remembered to talk, clap my hands, and generally be loud and obnoxious so there were no surpises.
George, Deadhorse is right beside the prudhoe bay oilfields. Here’s a link to it on google maps: deadhorse
Ewok, We were there in June, about the 20th I think. I remember that was almost but not quite the summer solstice.
Klaus, I will definitely be checking out your blog tomorrow.
Friends, thank you all for stopping by and playing the My World meme.
Wow I love those shots of the birds, great captures.
Cheers!

Great shots and I really had to laugh at the pink flamingo. Yep, they are everywhere, ha.
This is just weird, but the new bird is a bonus.
All riiiight!!! A new bird and you weren’t a snack for a bear!
Looks interesting place, nice shot of the birds too.
Whole town of recycled trailers? Scary.
Hungry Polar Bears would have prevented me from venturing anywhere! How brave you are!
Yep – exactly like Miami Beach! Except we don’t have Red-necked Phalaropes down there….
But great to get a lifer! I got a special one on Friday! Watch tomorrow!
Cheers, Klaus
I cant remember where I heard of Deadhorse Alaska before. What time of the year did you visit?
Wren, I couldn’t find Deadhorse on a map. Is it still north of the Artic Circle?
Beautiful Wren… But–I wouldn’t wander too far if the polar bears were lurking AND hungry!!! Yow!!!! Looks like very FLAT land up there. What was the temperature when you were there???
Hugs,
Betsy
