At the other end of our train ride was a bus, and at the end of our bus ride was a hotel in Fairbanks, looking like a rustic log cabin and situated on the banks of a small river. We were greeted by a pair of moose at the entrance.
No, these weren’t counted on my wildlife life list, any more than the moose signs in Anchorage were.
We arrived just before dinner and departed right after breakfast, so there wasn’t a chance to see downtown. Thanks to the long Alaska summer days, however, we had enough daylight to walk around the grounds and explore. It took me no time at all to find the ice cream parlor next door.
Suddenly, I’m quite happy to be traveling by bus.
After ice cream, I followed an arrow pointing behind the hotel. It was labeled “duck hotel” and sure enough, I found the hotel.
and the ducks.
The next day, we hopped back on the bus for the first of two days traveling the Dalton Highway.

Thank you for hosting Skywatch and for visiting my blog, Wren. Looks like you had a great time in Alaska. We’ve never been there but it looks like fun from your photos.
Thank you all for joining the trip and sharing this part of my [temporary] world.
Very nice photos! Thanks for sharing these beautiful moments with us! I especially like the photo of the restaurant having an airplane on the roof!
Great pictures. You must have had fun taking all those. Love the hotel out back. and the ducks.

Thanks for sharing with My World!
Looks like a fun family hotel!!! Curious moose! I wonder how many other blogs around the world have them for being so cute!
Jack was on a army audit in Fairbanks in January in the early 70′s. Question Jack would love to know: so folks still keep their cars running while out shopping? And our there still recharger stations along the streets? January in Fairbanks. Be brave or call Sarah Palin! LOL!
Alaska does indeed have a lot of cool quirkiness to it. My favourite was the baby moose.
What great stuff you are seeing! Wonderful photos! Love the Moose and the Duck Hotel!
Nice place, the ‘lucky duck’ is very original and the ducks are lucky to have their own hotel. Thanks for sharing!
such a lovely world!
Oh my gosh those are adorable moose, do you know what they were made of? And the Duck Hotel what a great idea. Love the plane as well. Now i want to know what the rooms looked like
Great post, Wren. It reminds me of the year I visited Alaska. My husband and I took the train from Anchorage to Fairbanks, where our son met us. He was living in a small mining town outside Fairbanks, called Ester. We didn’t see much of Fairbanks except for the University campus and Creamers Field (previous dairy-turned-preserve). My son was attending the University working on his master’s degree. And my memory of Creamers Field was my introduction to sandhill cranes flying over the trail.
