my world: fairbanks, alaska

At the other end of our train ride was a bus, and at the end of our bus ride was a hotel in Fairbanks, looking like a rustic log cabin and situated on the banks of a small river. We were greeted by a pairĀ  of moose at the entrance.

No, these weren’t counted on my wildlife life list, any more than the moose signs in Anchorage were.

We arrived just before dinner and departed right after breakfast, so there wasn’t a chance to see downtown. Thanks to the long Alaska summer days, however, we had enough daylight to walk around the grounds and explore. It took me no time at all to find the ice cream parlor next door.

Suddenly, I’m quite happy to be traveling by bus.

After ice cream, I followed an arrow pointing behind the hotel. It was labeled “duck hotel” and sure enough, I found the hotel.

and the ducks.

The next day, we hopped back on the bus for the first of two days traveling the Dalton Highway.

The duck “hotel” is cute. Wonder if they actually use It.

What a great tour. Can’t wait to see what the next bus ride brings. The plane is cool. But I love the duck hotel best. Great captures.

Neat photos – looks like a real original place, Fairbanks does. That plane sticking out of the roof is kind of bizarre, but heck, I’d go anywhere for ice cream, even in Alaska!

Betsy from Tennessee January 5, 2009 at 10:08 am

What great memories, Wren. I’m sure you want to go back to Fairbanks and stay longer.. They say that once you go to Alaska, you keep going back. I hope to get there at least once —or MORE.
Hugs,
Betsy

It’s too bad you didn’t have more time to explore Fairbanks. The glimpse you got was fascinating.
