As you know from yesterday’s post, penguins are a fun part of my world.
We took advantage of the 8am weekday feeding to get a closer look.
You may know that penguins are messy critters, even for birds. So the first order of business is a little clean up.
Herding cats has nothing on herding penguins.
This is Icarus. She is one of the oldest penguins here, so we would have seen her last time as well.
Icarus was a rescue penguin, and she imprinted on people early in her life. She likes people better than she likes other penguins, so she’s quite comfortable with being fussed over – though we were warned to keep our fingers away from her beak. None of my hands are in this photo, but I did get a chance to pet her later, when I wasn’t taking photos.
At last, it’s feeding time.
More, more!
No such thing as too many fish.
Life is good.

What a great post. I love the shots of the penguins in this post and the one below. Also, wonderful bird watching shots in the next post.
Great post, the photos are excellent of the wonderful birds.
They are so pretty with their quite different maekings to Antarctic or Australian Penguins.
Hawaii seems like an odd place for penguins. Yet it’s very cool that you got to pet one. Nice captures.
This is so cool! Penguins are so cute, but did not realize that they could be messy!
Great photos – aren’t penguins just the cutest creates ever!
The penguins themselves don’t smell of fish, but downwind from the enclosure is significantly and odoriferously fishy. Particularly later in the day, when it’s been awhile since the morning cleaning and the sun has had a chance to warm the concrete.
They feel sort of leathery, more like a marine mammal than a bird. The feathers are very slick and shed water, and the overall impression is of a smooth surface.
They do waddle in the most adorable way on land, then appear streamlined and jet-fast in the water. These birds are well cared for, a few even have to be on a diet because they overeat when given the chance. What’s lo-cal for a penguin? Squid in lieu of herring or other fish. (Jen, I hear a Pengcognito theme ….)
Fabulous post. I’ve always wanted to pet one. How do they feel when you pet them?
Cute photos Wren! I got to see some at Sea World a few years ago. Neat birds!
What an interesting post! Loved all the pics and the story.
What cute little critters. They seem very tame and certainly they appear to be very well cared for.
I had no idea that Hawaii had penguins! I would think it much too hot! Incredible!
Oh, I love penguins, too! All of your shots are fabulous, Wren! Thanks so much for sharing them!

Wren: What a neat bird to feature from your trip.
Aw, now I want to pet a penguin. What does it feel like? Were your hands smelly later, like wet dog? You have the most wonderful adventures.
