I’m not sure how this happened.
As you know from the many photos I’ve shared here, Mr Wren and I took an Alaskan vacation in the summer of 2004. In the course of going back through my photos from the trip and linking them to my list in Birdstack, I found I had counted the great-crested cormorants, but not the pelagic cormorants. So, five years after the fact, I’ve increased my life list by one.
Got birds?

.Jeff and I arent the best of record keepers either…Sometimes forget a bird here or there…Nice to discover that you have forgotten to add a bird….especially in the summer when things are a bit slow with birding..tee hee.
Agreed, and glad to know I’m not the only one – but 5 years may be a record for delayed reactions, at least for me.
LOL, that’s a great way to get a lifer. I have the same as Liza – to the point of doing a lifer jig – only to discover later I’ve seen that bird (usually several times).
So, will this species be coming soon to Birdorable?
You could do a whole series of your lifers. Oh, now I have to check and see how many of mine I could fill from your cute birdies. Have you thought of tailoring collections of pins to life lists for people?
Happens to me, too, Wren! My friends refer to this as “birding the hard drive” when we go over our pictures taken from way back that we haven’t uploaded or done any post processing yet – only to discover a new bird somewhere in there!
I’m glad it’s not just me, bob, though I’ll take my lifers where I can.
Love that, Wren. I’m the opposite usually. I’ll see a bird on a trip and be all excited that it’s a lifebird and then realize upon entering it in eBird that I’d seen it a few years ago. Still, either way, we saw the birds!!!
I’ve done that, too, Liza. This is a bit more fun, for obvious reasons.
That is so very different to my Pied Cormorant.
Lucky you found him to add to your list.
After the fact, I remembered the guide mentioning that there were different types of cormorants out there, but I didn’t make a note of it or realize I’d gotten a photo of this one.
Hey Wren, I know exactly how you feel. I can’t tell you how many times I have looked through me photographs later and found birds I didn’t even know were in the picture. I find that sometimes, I concentrate so hard on my subject, I miss everything else around. I once actually took a shot of a couple of Mergansers near the shore on the river, and when I downloaded them, voila, there were two Killdeer running, almost right in front of them that I never saw!
Nice to get a new lifer without even going outside eh?
Larry, it’s good to know I’m not alone in my absentmindedness. And this is not a lifer anyone else has gotten while in Southeast Michigan.
A new bird is good no matter when you add it to your life list. Nice photo!
Mick, I remember being totally enchanted by all the birds we saw on this trip. That I missed recording one at the time and found it now is like finding change in the sofa cushions – it’s not really new, but it sure seems like it.
I love seeing a new LL bird, it’s such a great feeling, so I hope you could tap into the joy of that ID moment, retrospectively!
Deborah, it’s like deja vu all over again.
