We came home from work one night last week to find this fine specimen of a crow perched atop a tree outside our garage. Despite the car, the garage doors, our conversation, and other disruptions, he didn’t move. I was surprised until I saw a group of five crows in the backyard. He was the sentinel, I assume, and judged us no immediate threat. Nor did he abandon his post.

I don’t know the significance of such a sentinel or of five crows, but it seems it should be a sign of some sort – much too archetypal and mystical to be just a family of birds migrating through.
