Add another interested Pelican watcher. Although I have not seen one for a few years (none frequent the Maine coast), I do seek them out when I visit an area where they are known to be. Very nice photo!
I love pelicans of any type Wren. As you say, they are so prehistoric! Like ibis and cranes. They always make me wonder what it would have been like back in the days of the Velociraptor.
I like the Australian Pelican…the black on his back is interesting, but I like our White Pelicans too…and the brown ones…I like them all! They are fun to watch as they plunge into the water for their dinner. It always looks like they are going to break their necks, though!
I think he may have been a little bigger than the typical White Pelican we see in the States, but at a distance with no nearby reference points, it’s hard to tell.

Oh, but you have puffins!
I have never seen one in person. I think they are a most interesting bird…. Michelle
I still remember the thrill I had the first time I saw one in the wild, after only seeing pictures previously. They are impressive.

And great blue herons, Larry. They definitely belong with the prehistoric crew.

I think we’re going to divide the world (simplistically) into two types of people: those who love birds, and those who don’t. We’ve picked our side.
Hi there, I’ve included several nice shots of Australian Pelicans on a post on my blog here:

Thanks, Trevor – those are great photos!
Pelicans are always fun to watch
I love to watch them in flight. They look very prehistoric.
To me, a pelican is a pelican is a pelican.
I have many friends and even family members who would agree with you.
I always find pelicans interesting and I see them every time I go out to watch shorebirds!
I was so thrilled the first time I saw one, and a little of that excitement returns with each viewing.
I think he’s plenty interesting. Such a huge bird (a good follow-up to the HUGE bats from your SWF post – holy cow!).
