I ♥ seeing the animals and learning about them. I ♥ having closer encounters than would be safe for me or the animal in the wild. I ♥ knowing that many people, including many kids, get their first love of animals, nature, and wildlife from a visit to the zoo.

I try to visit zoos in other cities when I travel, though the zoos are usually away from downtown where I am staying. I’ve had quite a few long bus rides and once or twice even rented a car to make the trip. I’ve always been glad I did. I always have a good time. I enjoy every opportunity to meet the animals up close, and of course, take lots of photos. Here’s another of the critters I encountered at the Australia Zoo.

First, in its habitat.

Later, I saw one up close thanks to a friendly zookeeper.

I would never have had the chance to see so much detail and learn a little about his habits if I’d just seen him in the wild. And neither would the flock of preschoolers who were fascinated and enchanted by their encounter. Zoos will always be a fun part of My World. If there’s one near you, visit the animals and support the zoo and its programs.

To see the world through others’ eyes, visit “That’s my World”, a weekly meme sharing photos and impressions of all the world seen through the bloggers’ eyes and lenses.

NOTE: As I said in the previous post, this was my original MyWorld post for 11/30/2009. I still don’t know how I switched content with a mobile upload intended to be published later, but that’s life in the computer age.– Wren

He’s handsome! Who is this guy? He looks a lot like the Texas and California Alligator Lizards I’ve seen (but they are smaller). I like ‘em!

I jotted down a note on his species, which of course I can’t find right now. I’ll be sure to leave a comment or add the info when I locate it.

Those cold-blooded types always look very deep in repose. Wonder how much they really know?

More than they are admitting, I’m sure.
