above freezing temps and a little rain

open water in the wetlands

Yes! Open water.

I noticed this because of all the starlings flocking around it and then flying away. There were even more in the nearby trees – I stopped counting at 100. Interestingly, they appeared to all be starlings. I think that must be a winter, or perhaps a mid-January, phenomenon. It’s much more usual to see them in mixed flocks with other blackbirds, grackles, and the like.

I also watched 10 house finches eating buds on a maple tree and a solitary crow fly across the sky.

Ah, winter ….

Many of us seem to be experiencing temperatures and conditions that evoke premature thoughts of spring, but Old Man Winter is probably plotting a none to subtle reminder that he’s not yet through with us.

There is something poetic about this photo. I don’t know what but it gives me that lonely winter feeling. Makes me want to curl up in front of a warm fire with a good book and a cup of tea.

Could it be the beginning of the spring thaw… hopefully? That is a beautiful sight.

(A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to you and the SW team for featuring my photo this week.

Wren: The area can change so quickly with a warming trend.

Woke to more falling snow this morning after rec’ing 12″ yesterday. Ahhh, spring, where for art thou? Well, it is a little early for us, afterall. Never-the-less, I sure am envious that you’re experiencing open water already! ~karen
