For a nature journal, the onset of spring is the logical time to start a narrative. Spring, after all, is when life begins.
To be precise, it begins anew, an affirmation of cyclical time and thought. Rather than a linear story, I’m beginning not at the beginning, but where I am, knowing that I will return to this very time again in a year.
What is Wrenaissance like in winter? How is it different from spring, summer, fall? Easy answers: It’s colder. There’s snow. The trees are bare. But what I notice most is the grasses in our wetlands. They begin to lean over in late fall, and by early winter they are laid low.
The butterfly garden lies dormant and bare. The deer leave their tracks.
The hornets have abandoned their nest.
It’s falling apart before our eyes. I’m curious about hornets. I wonder if they will come back to this same tree, or to another? Will the nest material be used by other hornets or birds to build a new nest?
The world is quiet and still.

brilliant post!
interesting posting. I have enver seen such a large hornets nest.
looks a lot like my world…lovely captures.
happy new year!
I like the image with the tracks! And that hornest nest is NASTY! I would not want to be next to it in the summer!
…My world = my studio
I think winter is about rest. These are beautiful.
Beautiful winter shots. The life goes a full circle in a year. The hornets will be back soon.
What lovely views of your wintry world and pensive reflections to accompany them. Your world is vastly different from my own … beautiful, yet way too cold for me.
Hugs and blessings,
Such marvelous wintery shots! Beautiful blue skies! Interesting to see how the landscape adjusts to the changes in climate!
Hope your new year is off to a great start, Wren!

Wren: Really nice captures in your icy world. I yearn for Spring also.
These are such beautiful winter shots. I don’t know about hornets but wasps try to rebuild their nest in the same spot in my doorway every year.
Happy New Year!
I’ve heard that these hornets won’t reuse, but I don’t believe everything I hear.
Seeing the world, through your eyes, is a pleasant journey. Your observations and imaginings are inspirational and thought provoking. I think I am aware, yet realize there’s even more. I wonder, too, will the hornets return to the same tree? The same nest? Will they repair it and make it bigger? I read somewhere recently that they recycle materials from the inside to continue building on the outside. You’ll just have to let us know! -karen
A happy new year, Wren!!
