How spectacular, Wren, to have cranes as neighbors. The only time I’ve seen Sandhills was many years ago at Malheur Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon. Closer to my current NYC home, I hear there are a couple of pairs out on the eastern shore of Long Island right now — which is pretty strange news.

Great pictures of the cranes. They surely are interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting looking bird.

you have them too :) but you were closer I think. I wonder if it is the same bird. It does not look exactly the same. ???????

Wren March 30, 2010 at 7:38 am

Good question, but the birds aren’t talking! :)

Lady Fi March 30, 2010 at 12:29 am

Lovely. It looks as if they’re playing hide-and-seek with you!

Wren March 30, 2010 at 7:37 am

More hide than seek, I think. :)

Those cranes are really neat! How wonderful to have them right there -to view and make lovely photographs of!

I am waiting for the day I get to see one of their babies!

Love those photos. Had a chance to do a little birding this past weekend myself.

Wren March 29, 2010 at 8:39 pm

See anything good?

Sylvia Kirkwood March 29, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Fantastic! Love the birds and your photos are beautiful as always, Wren! Hope your week is off to a great start!

The rain has stopped, the sun is out, and there were seven white-tailed deer across the yard this morning. The week is off to a great start!

Denise March 29, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Wow, I would love those birds in my back yard.

Wren March 29, 2010 at 8:41 pm

It’s really special when they come close to the house – sometimes I can get really good looks if I hide behind the blinds.

Rajesh March 29, 2010 at 7:21 pm

Fantastic images of beautiful birds.

Wren March 29, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Thanks, Rajesh. Seeing them is truly a gift.

Antigoni March 29, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Great photos! Are they family?

Wren March 29, 2010 at 8:54 pm

I’d love to adopt them but so far they’re a bit standoffish.

EG Wow March 29, 2010 at 6:12 pm

That’s quite the catch. And they are stopping off at your place on their way north? Very cool!

Wren March 29, 2010 at 8:55 pm

They are in the area all summer. There’s a wildlife refuge in the next country where thousands can be seen throughout the warm weather.

Carver March 29, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Wow! That is backyard birding at its best. Fantastic birds and shots of them.

Wren March 29, 2010 at 8:56 pm

They are our best backyard bird, for sure. And a total surprise the first year we saw them.

kathiesbirds March 29, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Wren, no wonder I did not see any of these at Bosque del Apache last week. They are all at your house! What a lucky woman you are! Beautiful! (p.s. I like the new look!)

Wren March 29, 2010 at 9:00 pm

Kathy, thanks – I’m glad you like the new design and layout. You’ll have to come visit here some time if you want to see cranes. :)

Martha March 29, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Wonderful shots of the sandhill cranes. I think they have left California now.

Wren March 29, 2010 at 9:01 pm

I’ve seen ours as early as February, but I don’t think they are around much after August most years. But six months of sandhills is ok.
