Yes, I know they’re bison, not true buffalo, but come on – it’s the same animal in the song, right? As part of the Potholes and Prairies festival, we got a good look at these beauties, who spend part of the year at the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge.
It was also the right time of year for little ones. We had good views, at a respectful distance.
Taken from inside the bus.
The photos are shown in reverse order – we only had a couple of minutes to admire them and take pictures before they decided to move to a less crowded venue.
Even when we didn’t see animals, we saw signs of them, like this badger hole.
Domestic animals are fun and interesting, too.
Birdwatching: it’s not just for the birds.

Wren, nice photo essay! and I agree, bird watching is just the excuse to get out there and enjoy the whole natural experience! Don’t you just love bison babies!
those bison are such impressive creatures!
Wow I’m quite impressed by your buffalo pictures. How awesome this beast is! Beautiful to see them like this. Thanks for sharing!
great photos! I would love to see these guys in person. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a great close up shot of striking creature. Also love that first one where they’re going uphill — such a beautiful scenery.
Great captures! Such close shots!
What delightful hairy creatures! So cute.
Very nice to see the bison. We see beefalo here occasionally.
Beautiful shots. I agree with you to watch them it is both interesting and fun.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Magnificent animals. And their domestic relatives are lovely too. Happy Fifth of July.
Oh, I love all your photos! They are so cool, Wren! I’ve seen the buffalo/bison up close in Yellowstone and they are so magnificent. Love the cows, too! Fun post for the day, Wren! Have a great week!

These are really cool shots.
Wow – that is so cool! What a sight!
It’s amazing to see them up close. This herd was very domesticated but being near them gave a sense of what it must have been like to see thundering herds on the prairie.
