a night at the zoo (my world)

detroit zoo marker

I finally visited the Detroit Zoo. I should say up front I didn’t pay to get in, but seriously, the trip was courtesy one of my credit cards, not the zoo itself. Also, neither one knows I’m a blogger, so it’s hardly payola. Regardless, as customer thank yous go, this one went well with me.

Love this marketing campaign. Vitamin Z, indeed!

Although I overheard one of the registrars say that more than 2,000 people had signed up for the event, and most were showing up, it was significantly less crowded than a normal day at any zoo. Many families with young children left after the first hour or two, but we stayed until the end, enjoying the opportunity to wander, visit the animals, and take photos with lots and lots of elbow room.

I particularly enjoyed uncrowded time in the aviary. For almost a half-hour, it was just me and the birds.

At one point, I heard voices and the sound of equipment, but I didn’t see anyone when I looked around, except these two, looking innocent.

I took these close ups, in case there was a need for mug shots of the rabble-rousers.

I love all your zoo photos. I shared some of mine from Seattle a couple of posts back.

Looks like a fun trip to the zoo and you got some fantastic shots in the aviary.

Wren, This is such a cute post. I hope the Zoo patrol didn’t have to take these two in for questioning!

The pictures are wonderful, the birds are gorgeous. They look like they were waiting for you to take photos.

Actually , the caramel coloured bird is very similar to the bird in your banner drawing so I am going to assume it is a Wren.

Some gorgeous birds in your images. I like very much the caramel coloured bird. I do not know what type it is though. Our zoo in Sydney – Taronga – is quite expensive. $43 for an adult. I think this is expensive. However, it is located overlooking the harbour and the views are to die for.

Hi wren,

I don’t know if my last message went through because my computer was acting up.

Went birding at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NY). I’ve IDed all the birds but this one. This picture was taken through binocs, so it’s not great quality. It looked remarkably like a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, but the sound was more like a slow, steady kew kew kew or koo koo koo, which from what I hear online is not what they sound like. Any ideas?

Its wonderful to have the opportunity to just be with the animals without any annoying people around.
When the worst heat is over here, I will def. check out the two Zoos too. Just to see what they are like.
