I’m actually rather proud of myself for getting this critter in a photo. You can’t tell from looking at the static presentation that she (both of the echidnas at the Australia Zoo are females) didn’t sit still for a minute. She was moving fast, too. I have lots of blurry snaps of her buzzing around her enclosure, and this one turned out the best. Still or in motion, echidnas are cute as they can be. They’re also the only monotreme (egg-laying mammal) other than the more famous platypus.

Very cool creature and a wonderful photograph. I love the texture!
New to me, too. And definitely hyper. I’m not sure how anyone ever sees one in the wild if they move this much all the time.
what a cool little critter! i’d love to see one of those. hyper little guys huh? this shot turned out great!
What a cute critter. Echidna is a new animal for me. Thanks for sharing your critter.
