Wrenaissance Reflections
my path to embodied, feminist, earth-centered spirituality

To Be Blessed

To be blessed
said the sleeping cat
is to vibrate
in time
with the purring universe

To be blessed
said the shining star
is to burn
with the white-hot
passion of all life

To be blessed
said the dirt
in the graveyard
is to hold
everyone’s dreams
until they are called for

About this poem and photo

I’m taking a class from RitualWell, “Reading & Writing Poetry as Sacred Jewish Text” with Jake Marmer. It’s fantastic. As part of tonight’s session, we read “The Blessing of the Old Woman, the Tulip, and the Dog” by Alicia Ostriker. We were then given seven minutes to write our own poem in the same format, starting each verse with, “To be blessed / said the …” This is my effort, the first verse inspired by my two companions who did not find the immersion in poetry as stimulating as I did.
