Psalm of Lamentation

Oh Blessed Holy One,
How could you
create this beautiful, wonderful earth
only to let us destroy it?

We are like toddlers
playing with matches.
The fires lit by our selfishness
consume all around us.

Oh Blessed Holy One,
How can we make right
that which we have made wrong?
Will you let us be consumed
not by your holy flame
but by our own crass smouldering?

We turn to you
when we cannot repair
the mess we have made,
when we can no longer hide
in the cool, green forest
we have made desert.

Send your cooling waters,
we pray.
Let not our scorched earth
boil them away
before they cleanse us
of our ashes.
